Trippie Redd – A Love Letter To You 4 : Review

A Love Letter To You 4 is the fourth instalment of Trippie Redd’s series of ‘A Love Letter To You‘ (ALLTY) mixtapes that led to him gaining notoriety. ALLTY4 can only be described as 59 minutes of emo/hip-hop enfused ballads. Trippie starts off the album with a spoken word intro expressing the shortcomings of his past relationship and how “ It was love at first sight and misery after two months”, nevertheless Trippie like most people going through a breakup starts to display his long for what once was, and his desire to be loved again.

Subsequently through this stage of grief Trippie is starting to show one of the many signs of grieving a breakup; anger, hence the title of the second track ‘Who needs love’. Thematically, the song is about Trippie not wanting to pursue love after the failure of his past relationship as he cannot bear to stand the emotional rollercoaster of love again.

Trippie following  his feelings of anger is now bargaining for his lover back on a soft guitar led medley;‘ Love Sick’ and tells his ‘bae’ “don’t worry ‘bout what I said’ and there’s “no way I meant that shit”. He then reminds his lover of high school where Trippie told her “you’d be my ride or die until the end”. This is not the first time they’ve gone through a rough patch as shown on track 10, Hate me. However we do not know if these same sentiments are mutual between Trippie and his partner.

Continuing on his bargaining for love, Trippie is desperate for answers on ‘Love me more’. Trippie wishes his partner could love him the way he loves her, but his efforts all seem to fall short , causing Trippie to ask what is she really looking for? This frustrates Trippie as he belts “ I wish that you would love me more” over and over again.

‘Real feel’ finds Trippie in denial, how can it all come to an end  if the feelings were real? How can Trippie cope without his soul mate no longer by his side. Trippie shows us a more darker side to his grieving as shown by his darker tone of voice and guitar instrumentation. It is clear this relationship has run its course, but its apparent Trippie is still in love and cant fathom that things are at the end. Similarly, this is the same theme on the eight track ‘Till the end of time’.

However, Trippie finally reaches initial acceptance on ‘abandoned’ as he finally comes to the conclusion that he cannot be with his love, because their relationship is toxic and a detriment to both their health. This acceptance has allowed Trippie to have redirected hope that he can find another partner that understands him, and can love him the way he has always longed for.

To conclude, ALLTY 4 is an emotional rollercoaster of emo ballads, which uncovers Trippie’s undying love for his partner filtered in with some unique trap songs. In my opinion, this is one of Trippies most consistent project yet and gives me the impression that he is maturing as an artist and taking his time to improve his craft.  The future is bright for Trippie and I cannot wait to see the new heights his music will take him.
