The sub-genre ‘Trap’ has become the most popular sub-genre in music for well over the last five years. Trap music influence on music is apparent when looking at any music charts. It’s distinctive sound but yet diverse artist make for some of the best music you’ll hear. Heres our ranking of the best trap projects of the year.

10. NoCap – Steel Human

Since 2018, NoCap has released five mixtapes and gone RIAA certified gold, an amazing feat for the upcoming rapper. ‘Steel Human’ gives a glimpse into the harsh realities many of today’s youth face in America. NoCap painful vocal deliveries and dark subject matter depict someone who has seen it all. The mixtapes bleak themes show a vulnerability few trap artists are willing to show. NoCap is one artists development that we should all look forward to.

9. Lil Uzi Vert – Eternal Atake

‘Eternal Atake’ became one of the year’s best selling albums, but its long await was certainly not worthwhile. Uzi however did make it up to fans by including snippets/leaks in the deluxe edition, which did save the day. ‘Eternal Atake’ finds Uzi take us on an intergalactic adventure due to its heavy space-aesthetic.

8. Lil Durk – Just Cause Y’all Waited 2

Durk is no longer that dread headed trouble maker from the southside. Over the last couple years, Durk has evolved as an artist to become one of trap’s premier artists. ‘Just Cuz Ya’ll Waited 2’ blends hood bangers and love songs effortlessly. Durk’s evolution has been a beauty to watch.

7. Future – High Off Life

Future may be on a downward trajectory, but a solid trap album is still within his capabilities. ‘High Off Life’ may not have given us the numerous sides of the wizard that his fans love, however it still manages to include bangers like ‘Tycoon’ and ‘Outter Space Bih’.

6. Playboi Carti – Whole Lotta Red

‘Whole Lotta Red’ undoubtedly tops the list of most anticipated albums of the last five years. Carti rise to superstardom since ‘Magnolia’ has been met with praise as well as criticism, much like this album. WLR leans away from Carti’s jovial work, and embraces his new punk persona. The album is full of experimental trap production, but still maintains what Carti stans fell in love with all those summers ago.

5. Moneybagg Yo – Time Saved

Moneybagg might just be the hardest working rapper, having released 15 project in the last five years – CRAZY right?

Nevertheless, Time Saved is a testament to how hard the Memphis MC works. His dope-boy rhymes and his southern drawl make every track 10 times better. ‘Time Saved’ fits the mould for what a great trap project should entail. Moneybagg is certainly one to watch out for.

4. Dababy – BLAME IT ON BABY

The album already spawned one of the biggest tracks this year; yes it’s clear he’s a hit-making machine. Much like Gunna, Dababy rarely take himself serious. His tenacious energy along with his charming demeanour are on full display throughout.

3. Gunna – WUNNA

Gunna’s debut album was easily one of the best albums last year, although ‘WUNNA’ doesn’t trump its predecessor it is still a very solid follow up. ‘WUNNA’ continues on Gunna’s choice of atmospheric and ambient production; the first track ‘ARGENTINA’ epitomise this. ‘WUNNA’ unlike most trap rappers takes a very colourful outlook on the sub-genre.

2. Don Toliver – Heaven Or Hell

Don Toliver verse on Travis Scott’s ‘ASTROWORLD’ stole the show two years ago. Two years later and he’s released his first full length project. ‘Heaven Or Hell’ consist of luscious trap synths and dreamy auto tune melodies, much like his label mate Travis. ‘Cardigan’ and ‘Wasted’ are some of the album highlights as Don’s delivery is infectious from the listen.

1. Lil Baby – My Turn

‘My Turn’ is Baby’s most complete project to date after releasing several projects since his breakout. My Turn finds Baby depict his life before rap; a much dark period in his life and juxtapose against his choices of new found fame. The albums pop friendly appeal but yet trap dominating sound made the best trap project this year.
